Do all of my employees need to be tested?
No, only employees exposed to a noise level of 85 dB A or higher are required to be tested. It is also recommended to test those employees exposed to noise levels above 80 dB A. This can be determined by performing a noise assessment on your premises.
Where can testing be done?
Our testers will come to your place of work to perform tests. All that is needed is a quiet room (preferably carpeted), well away from any noisy machinery.
How often is testing required?
A baseline hearing test should be taken at pre-employment or before the employee is exposed to noise. Testing is then recommended to be done annually for the next 2 years, then every 3 years thereafter. Testing should be carried out more frequently where a hearing abnormality is detected or where risk to hearing is high.
What do my results mean?
At the end of your hearing test, an audiogram will be produced of your results. This shows your hearing levels at a series of frequencies. Your hearing level will also be classified in terms of the HSE Categorisation Scheme. This determines whether you're hearing is at a normal level, or whether you require further testing or referral. All results will be fully explained by the tester at the end of the test. Please feel free to ask any questions if you do not understand the results.
Noise Assessment
Why do I need a noise assessment?
A noise assessment should be carried out if employees may be exposed to noise at or above 80 dB A. This is set out in the Noise At Work Regulations. A noise assessment can tell you: who is at risk of losing their hearing; what is causing that risk; and what needs to be fixed.
What actions should we take after having a Noise Assessement done?
At the completion of a Noise Assessment you will receive a report detailing and analysing noise levels in your workplace. The report will also show how these findings relate to current Noise at Work Regulations and give recommendations on further actions to be taken. These may include ways in which to lower noise levels, provision of hearing protection, and hearing testing of employees exposed to high noise levels.
Where can I find more information on the Noise at Work Regulations?
More information on the Noise at Work Regulations is available on the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/noise.
